Even though vinyl siding is virtually maintenance free, doesn't mean that you don't have to do anything with it to keep it looking good. Vinyl siding does get dirty from pollution, dust, and car exhaust and needs to be washed.
To wash vinyl siding you want use a mild detergent like laundry soap. You will also need a hose and a sponge to do this job. You can try using a power washer to remove the grim but sometimes its better to use the old fashion elbow grease to remove it, plus if the presser is to high and the siding is brittle then you might damage the siding. When cleaning it with a detergent it is a good idea that you cover any plants that are buy the house to prevent the detergent from getting all over them and killing them. To keep vinyl siding looking good it is a good idea to clean it about once every year.
You want to trim back any trees or shrubs that are to close to the house. the branches will scratch the siding up and over time might scratch through the siding leaving a hole in the siding which will led to moisture getting into the exterior sheathing of the house and the sheeting will start to mold up and start to deteriorate. A little FYI cut back any tree branches that are on your roof also because what it will start to do is scrap away at your singles and you will eventually get a leaky roof.. Trees next to a house plus wind can equal a lot of repair.
Wind damage can also occur with vinyl siding. Its a good idea just to replace the whole piece that came off the house with a piece that is of the same color, obviously but make sure that the piece is securely fastened to the house so that it wont happen again I will explain how to repair wind damaged vinyl in a future article.
