Deadline for Homeowner Applications set at April 11

For any homeowners who were victims of Hurricane Sandy or any other tropical storm, the New York Rising Housing Program has set the deadline for applications at April 11. If you need assistance rebuilding, elevating, or repairing your home because of damage from a storm, you’ll need apply for assistance by this date.

If your home was damaged during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 or the tropical storms Irene or Lee in 2011, you are eligible to apply for assistance in repairs, or to have your home bought out. Communities can also get together and opt in to have the neighborhood bought out by the state. This is only available to homeowners, and not owners of multiple-unit dwellings. If you’re already in the program, the deadline will not affect you.

The New York Rising Housing program has authorized the payment of $408 million to 6,366 Long Island residents for repairs and buyouts. $104 million will go to reimbursing residents who have already had repairs made, and $163 million went to 4,877 Long Island residents for construction and repair. New York State is offering $141 million to purchase 360 homes in Long island.

The Long Term Recovery Group, which is made up of several non-profit, volunteer, and government agencies, will work to publicize the new April 11 deadline. They’ll also provide case managers to help those applying to the program.

Application to the program will not guarantee that you’ll receive help, but if you don’t apply, you won’t be able to be considered.

The Long Term Recovery Group is focusing on low- to middle-income families, which they define as $75,200 for a family of four. Nevertheless, case managers will work with any homeowner who has been affected by the storms.
